Kinds Words of Thanks for the Caregivers at Children’s Hospital

I received this lovely letter from a patient dad the other day. I wanted to share it with all of you, not only because I thought you would find it inspiring but because he really paints a picture of the love and support our caregivers give to the patients and families at BC Children’s Hospital. This letter was written on his son’s first birthday, which was spent in BC Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

I just wanted to thank everyone for being here. I know it’s your job to treat the sick – care for the sick – to cure the sick – but it’s not your job to love Frankie. But we know that you do.

You’ve all, in your own way, given us the greatest gift that any person can give another human being. The gift of hope – the hope that one day we can go home, as a family and be one again. I thank you for this gift from the bottom of my heart.

Each night as I sit alone I hope that Frankie has a good night sleep and wakes with a smile on his face. I only sleep knowing that you people – you great doctors, you hard working nurses, loving volunteers – are there to help him when he needs it.

I love you all – you all will forever be in my heart – I feel that you’re the work you all do there is a little reward but I hope it is payment enough to know that when Frankie first came here he was terrified of everyone and now he is all smile…He sees you guys and his eyes light up – I know my son – he loves you all!

We all thank you for helping Frankie reach this milestone year one of a long beautiful life.

Dad of one-year-old Frankie, who has spent almost half of his life in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

6 ICU 2beds equmnt 2

Three PICU bed stations with no space for a parent to sleep by their child.

The PICU is a wonderful but heartbreaking place. forty-eight per cent of the kids in the PICU are under two years old and their care needs are unique and intense. This is a time when parents need the space to take an active role in the care of their children, have their support system – family and friends – nearby, and the children need a quiet space for rest and extra space for equipment and care.  Yet this ward is incredibly crammed and noisy.

8 ICU rounds

Parents and caregivers stand by the foot of a row of PICU beds.

The PICU needs to be replaced but that can only be done with a new Children’s Hospital. This is where I am so grateful for the Super Community support. By taking part in this program, you are speaking up for Frankie’s family and saying that the Hospital is important to you. So thank you!

For fun, I want to show you a few drawings from kids around BC who shared with us, what a perfect Hospital room would be for them. Enjoy.

What a beautiful letter – thank you for sharing. This is such an important cause to support. I hope we can all get together and help families like Frankie’s!
