What Makes BC Children’s Hospital Unique

As Paige mentioned in her last post BC Children’s Hospital is a special place where kids are faced with some very real health challenges. And while not every one of the 75,000 children who are treated at the hospital every year are critically ill, many are, and the reality is that they often have nowhere else to turn. That’s because ours is the only multi-centre child health-care facility of its kind in BC, dedicated to providing the best pediatric clinical care, research and education to children and families across the province.

Our patients may be small but their needs are tremendous. Our research and treatment programs are shaped by the simple fact that children can’t be treated like adults. In fact, young patients are actually more complicated to treat. Children, for instance, require 40 per cent more nursing care than adults because their medical and psychological needs are higher. Even the equipment required to treat a newborn differs from the equipment required to treat a teen. We need everything from breathing tubes to pumps that regulate the dosage of medicine, in age-appropriate sizes.

As Paige alluded to, treating our patients like kids goes beyond health care. We never forget that every single child we see is away from their home, school and the things that make them feel safe. That’s why our staff works extra hard so that children can spend less time in the hospital and more time at home with their families.

From pediatric research and staffing to specialized facilities and equipment, every element that makes BC Children’s Hospital so important requires a significant investment. Through the generosity of donors, we can help kids reach their potential and ensure that each and every child who turns to us receives the best health care possible.
