2009 Holiday Tea

On December 10th I had the privilege of attending our annual Holiday Tea at the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver. With nearly 300 dedicated donors at the event, the atmosphere was festive.

Mr. Thompson at the 2009 Holiday Tea

Paige Roper, the Hospital’s very own Sunshine Ambassador, spoke at the tea about getting a cancer diagnosis when she was only 10 years old and how she coped with life in the Hospital. She received a well-deserved standing ovation for her gripping story.  As well as being an excellent speaker, Paige is also in the process of writing a book and has her very own blog where she talks about life in – and out – of the Hospital.

What made this event so great for me, in addition to having the chance to listen to such eloquent speakers, was the chance  to meet people who have been involved with supporting the Hospital in a variety of ways and to learn what motivates them to give. Eighty-year-old Frank Thompson, who has been a donor for more than 40 years and has attended every single Holiday Tea since they began, is just one of the generous individuals I got a chance to chat with.

Frank was a school teacher before retiring and so he has always been a strong believer in helping children reach their potential. He told me how giving to BC Children’s Hospital is his way of ensuring this happens long into the future: Frank has made the Hospital the beneficiary of his estate.

Paige – and kids just like her – are thankful for the generosity that Frank imparts through his donations and legacy. It was inspiring to see these two worlds – young and old, donor and beneficiary – come together in a festive spirit, if only over a cup of tea.
