Blogs

Maybe you’ve been blogging for a while. Or maybe you might not know you already have a blog – it’s part of your Super Community! (Every time you share a story on your Super Community page, you’re actually creating a blog post.)

Either way, you, your blog and the rest of the blogging world can do a lot to raise funds for BC Children’s Hospital, and raised awareness about the work they do. Here are just a few ideas for blogging with impact:

Run a marathon. Have your Super Community members stage a 24-hour blogathon. Here’s how it can work:

  • Pick a date where everyone’s available – ideally for 24 hours, but otherwise in shifts.
  • Post information about the blogathon – the date, how it works, who’s taking part and how you’d like people to contribute – on your Super Community page.
  • Get that same information out to as many people as you can via your blogs, on Facebook, on YouTube, on Twitter… and let us know, too!
  • Start emailing people you know and ask them for a pledge – say, a few dollars for every blog post you’re able to write, up to a certain limit.
  • Write a post for your blog with the same information, and ask your readers to leave their pledge as a comment or as an email to you.
  • Then, the day of the blogathon, start posting!
  • Throughout the day, visit your other channels (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and remind people of what you’re doing. Encourage them to come by and comment… and let them know it’s not too late to pledge!
  • When the blogathon wraps up, thank everyone – bloggers and donors alike – and give your community members a chance to recuperate.
  • Then tally the final totals – money, of course, but also the number of blog posts – even the word count, if you can! – and post that to your blog and to your Super Community page.
  • Remind people to send in their pledges via your Super Community donor page… and let us know how it all went!

Hold a blogging carnival. This can be a great way to raise awareness and spread the word outside your immediate circle of friends. A blogging carnival is a period of time – a day, week or even a month – when bloggers are invited to post about a particular topic.

You could pick a given day or week as well as a topic (e.g. BC Children’s Hospital, your personal superheroes, children’s health), and start rounding up bloggers to agree to write a blog post about it in that time. They can be people you know as well as those you haven’t met, but who you think could do a great job.

Post to your own blog about the upcoming carnival, and invite any of your readers with blogs to participate, too – just ask them to let you know they’re taking part.

Explain the goal is to raise funds and awareness, and ask them to include a link to your Super Community page in their post as well as a mention of the blog carnival and a link to your carnival announcement post. (That way, anyone else can join in, too.)

Keep track of everyone who’s participating. Then, when the carnival opens, post your own blog entry (you’re taking part too, right?), and remind the participants to post theirs. As they do, keep tabs on their posts.

Every day, if there have been new posts, write a round-up blog post of your own, linking to all of the new posts with short excerpts – and thank the bloggers!

Wrap up the carnival with a final post listing all of the participating blog posts. (Be sure to cross-post it to your Super Community page as well.) Thank everyone in your posting, and send them a personal email as well thanking them for helping to make a difference!

Looking for ideas for blog posts?

  • Interview someone whose life was changed because of BC Children’s Hospital – a patient, a family member or a friend – and tell their story.
  • Write a report from the future. Did BC Children’s Hospital get the help they need from our community? What kind of difference did that make?
  • Just tell people about your Super Community, and why you’ve created or joined it. If you want to, invite them to join, too.

And don’t forget to add a badge… plus you can always put our Be a Superhero! widget on your blog! Just click on “GET THE WIDGET” on this video and you’ll get a little code snippet you can paste into your blog template or a post.

What a fun idea Eisha! I think a lot of people would love to do this as it’s a fun, inexpensive way to raise a little change for a great cause.
